Choose FormatAppalachian Dawn opens with a serene, folk-inspired melody in the woodwinds, evoking the misty stillness of an Appalachian morning before the rest of the ensemble gradually awakens. Hendricks draws on traditional modal harmonies, weaving them through a contemporary concert band texture.
The piece builds through three distinct sections: a pastoral opening, an energetic dance-like middle, and a triumphant return of the opening theme fully scored for the entire band. The finale features a chorale-style coda that brings the music to a warm, resonant close.

This piece was the centerpiece of our spring concert and received a standing ovation. The folk influences resonated deeply and the difficulty level was just right for my advancing 8th graders.
The MIDI preview sold it for me, and the real thing exceeded expectations. The chorale at the end is genuinely moving. My trumpet section said it was their favorite piece all year.
Beautiful piece, very professionally produced. Knocked one star because the mallet part requires a full marimba we had to borrow, but the music itself is wonderful.
